Beyond Flexner Alliance Fall 2022 Newsletter

The Flexner Report of 1910 transformed the landscape of medical education in America through changing the standards of medical schools. Its legacy of admissions, education, and research standards profoundly changed the medical profession: most notably, the findings led to the closure of most colleges that prioritized training learners who identified as Black, female, and in rural settings. The consequences of the report shaped inequities in health care workforce and the Beyond Flexner Alliance is committed to advancing social mission by acknowledging the history of workforce and training inequities within medicine and beyond. As our work continues to evolve, so do the needs of our allies and accomplices. We have some significant updates about our Alliance that will be coming later this Fall that we are excited to share. Until then, enjoy this newsletter and stay tuned to our channels to keep up to date on how you can join our efforts in advancing social mission in healthcare and health workforce equity!

The Beyond Flexner Alliance is hiring for a full-time Institute Associate position! They will be primarily working with communications strategy with internal and external partners, Health Justice Fellowship and Student Assembly programming, and assisting with the BFA Conference! If you want to work in policy advocacy for promoting social mission in health professionals education, apply by following the link on the “Join our team” button above!

In addition to the position, we are growing our BFA community! If you are a student in medical, dentistry, nursing, physician associate, or public health professional training and wanting to learn more about how to incorporate health equity into your eventual practice, be invited to join our slack community by filling out the survey at the bottom of the BFA Student Assembly page. Health Justice Fellowship

This Fall, we are excited to announce our new cohort of Health Justice Fellows!

The Beyond Flexner Alliance’s Health Justice Fellowship Program seeks to create a dynamic community dedicated to nurturing an insurgent politic among the next generation of leaders in healthcare that represent the values, perspectives, and wisdom of the those greatest affected by systems of oppression, those that have historically been barred from the academy and the health professions. The program is dedicated to nurturing the talents of trainees who already show promise and commitment to advancing health justice in society and social mission in health professional training. The yearlong fellowship will allow participants to hone their skills, provide them with new skills, and broaden their networks in ways that will help sustain them in their future work. We are elated to welcome the 2022-2023 class of Health Justice fellows!
