Don’t Agonize, Organize: Healthcare in Crisis and Resident Physician Unionization Webinar

The US Surgeon General’s Office has put out an advisory report highlighting the need to address the health worker burnout crisis. Others would describe this burnout as moral injury, resulting from the ideals and values of front line workers confronting the callous indifference of the healthcare system. Instead of trying to heroically do more with less, many senior physicians are leaving the field while younger clinicians are leading efforts to organize in the form of unions. As the challenges of healthcare continue to unfold in the face of the pandemic, join us as we discuss what front line clinicians are facing, how trainees are resisting via unionizing, and how these trends fit into a larger landscape of health worker organizing.

The War of Attrition in Health Professional Education Webinar

Diversifying the health professional student body isn’t enough if the structures to support their success and completion of training. Research has highlighted disproportionate attrition rates for minority and financially disadvantaged students in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and PA training programs. Recent research in medicine has highlighted the correlation of experiences of discrimination and socio economic hardship with increased risk of attrition. This discussion will highlight how health professional training institutions and education societies can work to address these disparities.
